Professional doctoral degrees have existed in the United Kingdom since the early 1990s. It can take two to five years full-time and three to eight years part-time.

The early programmes tended to be based on a small number of titles
which were fairly common across the Universities that offered them.
The main contenders were:

  • Doctor of Education (EdD)

  • Doctor of Engineering (EngD or DEng)

  • Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych)

  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Since that time, the development of Professional Doctorates has taken two forms. In parallel with a significant level of growth of use of the existing titles there has been a tendency for new titles to appear, indicating in more detail the precise title area of the award. Examples include the Doctor of Administration and Doctor of Finance, to provide more detail in the area covered by Business Administration, and proliferation of different specialities in Psychology.

In January 1998 the following titles were available: Doctor of Clinical Psychology, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Educational Psychology, Doctor of Counselling Psychology, Doctor of Occupational Psychology, Doctor of Clinical Science-Psychotherapy, Doctor of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

The PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) is a terminal degree that provides  educational and practical preparation to become a practicing clinical  or counseling psychologist through the study of mental illness, treatment options,  and assessment practices and fulfills state requirements for psychologist licensing.  As a decidedly practice-focused professional degree, it is distinct from a PhD in psychology.

The PsyD program follows the ‘practitioner-scholar’ model, engaging in practice-oriented study. This allows those with a doctor of psychology degree to pursue a wide range of career options, including (DiscoverPhDs, 2021):

  • Clinical Psychologist,
  • Counselling psychologist,
  • Mental health counselor,
  • School psychologist,
  • Psychotherapist,
  • Consultant,
  • Licensed psychologist.

PsyD by Publication & PsyD online program – a doctoral-level award to the seasoned professionals with a master’s degree and publishing background. This program is also designed for PhDs who have clinical and consulting practice in psychology and psychotherapy.

This program allows you to earn your professional doctorate by publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals, scientific monograph.

Scientific content may be backdated up to 10 years and is always acceptable.

Basic requirements for academic degree holders:

  1. Master’s degree in psychology or medicine or related fields.
  2. Scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  3. Participation in Scientific Meetings.
  4. Postgraduate education and continuous professional training.

Based on the principles of academic mobility and recognition of education credits from universities,  professional schools and associations, the academic council may recognise their equivalence to this program.

Programmes classified at ISCED level 8 may be referred to in many ways, for example: PhD, DPhil, D.Lit, D.Sc, LL.D, Doctorate or similar terms. However, it is important to note that programmes with a similar name to ‘doctor’ should only be included in ISCED level 8 if they satisfy the criteria described in Paragraph 263.

  1. Classification criteria
  2. For the definition of doctoral or equivalent level, the following criteria are relevant:

Main criteria

  1. a) Written work requirements;
  2. b) Entry requirements;
 c) Minimum duration of level.

Subsidiary criteria

  1. a) Doctoral degree/qualification required for specific occupations.

Other programmes included in ISCED level 8.

  1. Second advanced research qualifications or higher doctorates may also be classified at ISCED level 8. These qualifications require the submission of a second substantial piece of research (further to the first doctoral thesis) usually at a considerably later stage of an academic career and often without formal supervision. Examples are the habilitation or doktor nauk qualifications, although most education systems only have one advanced research qualification granting doctoral degrees or equivalent qualifications. They are not usually linked with an education programme (i.e. candidates are not usually enrolled in a programme which leads to these qualifications). Second research qualifications are not coded separately within ISCED. Honorary doctorates given by universities on the basis of other considerations and not any research work are not covered under ISCED 8».

In accordance with international Conventions of education, Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region (Lisbon, 11.IV.1997) it is recommended to the authorized bodies of the countries signed or have joined those Conventions to consider PsyD Diploma as a document entitling its holder to engage in a professional activity according to awarding academic degree specified in the Diploma.

You can learn more about professional doctoral programs, Doctorate degree by Prior Publication

In the United States, a doctoral degree from a program acceptable to the licensing board is required, including the PhD., Psy.D., and Ed.D. are among the doctorate degrees that make individuals eligible to sit for the Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology (EPPP; CA Board of Psychology). The EPPP is the national licensing examination and its completion is required in order for one to obtain a license to practice psychology. While there is an increasing number of university-based Psy.D. programs, many Psy.D. programs are at newer professional schools of psychology.”
